Yangzi traveled to the State of Song. He met a guy who as well as his wife and concubine stayed in a hotel.
Yangzi found that the guy treated his wife well; however, he always blamed the concubine who was young and beautiful.
Yangzi felt curious. One day, he seized an opportunity to ask the guy why.
The guy replied, “The concubine thinks herself beautiful so she shows her arrogance and is full of conceit.”
She thinks that only her beauty can make other love her. In fact, the beauty is far from enough. In most time, a couple must care and serve each other sincerely and to do his or her best to make each other happy and comfortable.
If a woman neglects what she should do as a wife because of her beauty, her husband is apt to disfavor her. This is why I love my wife more.
With a great reverence, Yangzi replied, “What you said wakes me like a thunder. It is a very good motto to me; I admire you for your intelligence.”
Yangzi told his disciples that: “We, as the men of practice, should do the same. We should march bravely in the way of practice, never daunting; however, we should not show our virtue to others so as to eclipse others. If we could do so, we would be welcomed everywhere.”
