Huizi was one of Chuang Tzu’s friends. He was famed for sophism. He always liked to argue the toss and enjoyed picking quarrels furiously with people. Chuang Tzu disagreed about the sophistic habit of Huizi.
Someday, Chuang Tzu said to Huizi, “If we don’t set an acknowledged target every player has agreed before the match of shooting contest. We let the player shoot at random, after the match each player say that he has shot the target set by himself and is a marksman and a new Houyi. Is it so? Shall we call him a marksman?”
Huizi forced himself to say “Yes”.
“If so, every learner in the country plays his own tone to allege that his theory is the only truth and correct, then each of them is sage or is honorable as Empire Yao. Is it so?” Chuang Tzu asked further.
Huizi argued, “Right! On their own standpoint, their theories are all right. Theories are subjective to the changes of background. In each country, governor of each age has his own idea. Their policies are different; however, each of them fits its own local situation. Therefore, they are addressed sages respectfully. It is right that all of them are as good empires as Yao.”
Chuang Tzu cornered him by and from his own conclusion. Chuang Tzu said, “Now in our society, Confucian, Mo, Yang and Bing, plus you, dispute each other everyday. Each of you rebukes others. What’s matter with you?”
If each of you is right, there is nothing to dispute; if all of you are wrong, are you qualified to rebuke others?”
Now let’s start from another standpoint to talk. The only goal of practice is extricating you from the cycle of death and life to become sage and Buddha. As for the magic power and supernatural power that derive from the practice, we don’t pay much attention to them and don’t compare whose powers are high since the powers are not our keystone of practice. Additionally, the magic power that derives from the practice is unique in each practice.
Each of Sakyamuni’s five hundreds disciples has his own magic power, such as Ananda who has powerful memory, Shariputra who has firm and deep foundation of Buddhism theory, Yasas who has very far sight and Maudgalyayana who has high speed.
Huizi, Lu Ju whom you know well, one of his disciples through practice he has obtained the theurgy of harmonization with the wind, water, fire and earth. The disciple someday told him, ‘I have obtained Tao. In the winter I can boost the inner fire to resist the cold wind; in the summer I can employ the cool wind to eliminate hotness.’
Lu Ju told his disciples, ‘Yours just are the theurgies that harmonize with four gross elements and Yin and Yang. They are not the destination of practice and the real extrication but the derived power. They are not the last destination that we seek for.’
Qishan Weifeng’s interpretation of harmonization is good. He said, ‘In English, it also calls synchronization. As far as human body, a microcosm, as concerned, all organs’ functions should synchronize each other so body can work well. Each organ, even each cell, also is a complete microcosm. It should synchronize with other too. Let’s take a closer look, a cell actually constitute is made up of millions of molecule, atom and electron.
Electron is dynamic. Its vibration causes frequency that must require harmony and synchronization. Therefore, a human body is a huge electrophorus, which teems with vibrating electrons. When a person is healthy, all electrons have strong absorbability. When ill, the absorbability gets loose and some electrons being lost eventually.
Owing to different functions, each organ in body has its own frequency of vibration. Disharmony or desynchronizing of a frequency means that the organ of the frequency gets ill. So, doctor in future will not use various biochemical drugs to cure disease. For example, gastric ulcer will be cured through strengthening electrons in stomach. The frequency of stomach will be adjusted to normal frequency so the ulcer is cured without drugs.
Human’s intelligence is great and inspired, which our ancient sage had understood. The understanding is in the accordance with science. The theory of harmonization is what the ancient explained – The best way to practice is to integrate the three parts of inner vigor. The vigor, breath and soul come into peace and harmony. In realm of Samadhi billions of electrons sing in harmony until it completely becomes chorus. For example, by chanting or singing of sutra, their frequency seeks for inner harmony of inner microcosm so as to sublime you outside. It seeks for resonance from macrocosm. Let’s take an example of the sutra of Da Bei Zou. Various Buddha’s names that teem in the sutra represent different frequency. The grand power of the sutra is to chant by different frequencies to obtain responding results.’
As for the harmonization powers, I have them too. You see. I put two Ses (a kind of Chinese ancient instrument of music) in two rooms respectively. After I adjust the two Ses into same frequency, when I play a Se in one room, the other Se gives off same sound in the other room, which is the phenomenon of harmonization.
If I tune up a chord or down a little, such as from C key up to E, or from B down to F, then their sounds are different from each other.
If we compare it to piano, the notes, such as do, re, mi, fa, so are played in totally different way in key C or E and their pitches are different too. However, the notes are same. ”
Huizi had some apperception on Chuang Tzu’s comparison. He asked, “As you said, in the disputes where, Confucian, Mo, Yang and Bing pointed out what’s wrong in my ideas by their own viewpoints, whatever they spoke passionately, plausibly and volubly couldn’t prove that I am wrong. So it was inessential to me. Is that what you mean?”
Chuang Tzu replied, “Right. Each sect’s theory is based on its own premise, viewpoint and time. Each has its blind spot too. It is meaningless for you to dispute all day. What’s more, the dispute causes quarrel and it might lead to physical conflict and then finally bring hurt to you.
Once upon a time there was a guy in the State of Qi whose kid was naughty and uncontrollable. He thought that other father could discipline his kid so he sent his kid to the State of Song where his friend was asked to discipline his kid. However, he was afraid of his kid suffering since he spoiled his kid. He therefore told his friend not to discipline strictly, which is his blind spot in disciplining.
To protect a clock, we may use cloth and cotton to wrap it to prevent it from bumping. However, if our kid loses way, we just look for him around our house, instead of going out of the town, which gets bad result. This is another blind spot.
A guy from the State of Chu lodged in other’s house. He should act at what a guest should be, but the guy was impolite to the servants and porter. Do you think he would be happy to live there?
There was another guy who made a voyage by boat. At midnight, he went to quarrel with the captain and made him angry. Wasn’t he afraid that the captain would throw him into the river without causing other’s attention?
Huizi, you dispute all day. You do so many meaningless disputes and antagonize many people. Don’t you worry about your safety?”
